Celebration is my response to an invitation to create an expression of praise for artists receiving Alaskan Governors Artists Awards. I wanted it to be both book and sculpture, a piece that can be held in hand, or displayed so that its joyful imagery can be seen in the round. Hedi’s flag book was the natural choice of structure.
Each flag is a celebratory banner. Their imagery shouts excitement in compositions of playful forms sprinkled with plenty of confetti, and they clap together in applause as the book is opened (complete with sound effects). Arranged in a circle, in its fully open position, it reveals an explosion of cheer.
