“Change of A-dress” is an artist’s book highlighting the multiple use and continued re- use of a fiber. In this case, flax/linen. Handmade linen paper pieces gathered into sections bound with linen thread between waxed boards layered with pattern papers. I wanted to evoke a homey-ness, a distant memory, a hand sewn dress and to hold those feelings in the form of a book. I took apart a white linen dress revealing pattern cut sections and retained the sewing notions. Scrambling the objects – transforming some, rearranging others, the whole transformed from dress to book. The fabric was beaten to a pulp and resulting paper was air dried and allowed to crinkle and curl taking its natural form. Neither the paper or book block was pressed therefore the character of each page is viewed at once without the need to turn pages … viewing the book as a whole. Scattered between the pages are a few buttons, pins, snaps … hinting at what the previous incarnation of these fibers were.

Mary C. Leto After earning a degree in studio arts, Mary interned at Dieu Donne Papermill in NYC and decided to pursue a life of papermaking and book binding. She opened her own paper studio and moved to South Carolina establishing the Moon Tide Paper Studio. Mary works with locally gathered fibers to make paper unique to her locale, the Sea Islands of South Carolina’s Low Country and continues the work she began in New York 25 years ago. Mary’s books and paper sculptures have been shown nationally and are in many private collections. She teaches classes through her studio, local galleries and art centers. Leto’s work is documented in several publications, has received many NY Times reviews and is represented currently by Picture This Gallery, Hilton Head SC.
