The Red Thread Cycle provides gut-wrenching witness to the realities of sexual assault in the Caribbean region. Drawn from Trinidadian poet Shivanee Ramlochan’s first book of poetry, “Everyone Knows I Am a Haunting” (Peepal Tree Press, 2017), I created a series of books that demand careful but sustained engagement with the trauma and survival shared in these seven poems. Linked through repetitive imagery directly mined from Shivanee’s poems, I reinterpret their original linear poetic forms so that each structure can reflect the individual voice of the poem and refract its narrative, allowing the reader to access its core emotional complexity as they engage with each one.
Designed and letterpress-printed using Centaur type, pressure prints, and photopolymer on Rives Lightweight, each book is stored in a Tyvek envelope with hand-applied red stain and housed in a handmade filing box along with an audio recording of Shivanee reading all seven poems.

She is the founder of Poinciana Paper Press, a small and independent press located in Nassau, The Bahamas, which uses multiple forms of publishing to advance the diversity of Caribbean narratives.
