Akee, Maktub (Indeed, It Is Written)

Akeed, Maktub is an affirmation of my career as an artist. The inscription that lays on top of the portraits is a verse from the Qur’an which states,

“And by the pen and what it inscribes, by the favor of your Lord you are not mad.”

This verse struck a chord with me as an artist, especially given that most of my work is centered around the repetition of mantras written in Arabic in such a way that it is so excessive. The book is meant to be read from right to left, and the position of the facial movements is meant to inform that.
