Mosaic, a tunnel book, explores the experience of standing on the mosaic floor of Saint Mark’s cathedral in Venice, Italy. In the church the patterns are all encompassing and beautiful. The eye is drawn into a whirling vortex of pattern. Hand cut linoleum prints present details from the floor mosaics. The tunnel book is printed on Mohawk 80lb. paper on a Vandercook press. The edition of 24 is signed and numbered and includes an archival box which has a linoleum print on the cover.

Books are sensual objects. As I create my work, I am interested in how different components such as the textures of different mark making (drawn or printed), the feel of the paper, or the sound of the page relate to the entire book. My approach to the book is often sculptural: the form presents my idea. Words, when used, reinforce the visual. My knowledge of different book forms has evolved over the years spent as a book conservator and teacher. I see myself as a keeper of craft; my respect for a beautifully realized book is combined with a modern artist’s sensibility.
