Description

About this piece:
Herbarium Record is one of a series of recent books I have made related to natural history collections. While visiting these archives and museums in Europe and the United States, I began to photograph some of the samples in situ and then to document drawings, tags and notations made by the scientists and curators who collected and preserved these specimens. The hanging tags, not unlike book pages, contain information about individual items in some of these collections. The overall structure of this book object also reflects and refers to the methods used in attaching information to each specimen. In this series I have been using tags and labels as pseudo book pages- they seem to be able to present images and text the way that a book can, but in a much less structured way. I see these as both narrative and successive platforms for conveying information.

All photographs are by the artist. Images for this book were taken at the Indiana University Herbarium Collection.
Materials:
paper, waxed thread, heat transfers
