Artist Statement about work:
In this collaborative work we began “a conversation” about issues that have shaped our lives. Using the same artist’s book ideation cards drawn as our guide, we fashioned each of our books alike to include personal statements, a word association list, and individual artwork using unfamiliar techniques. The fourth book invites the reader to join our conversation. The multi-section slip case using the colored wax-resist paper houses the separate books as a single unit while it allows for random and non-sequential reading.
Carol Erickson collaborated with Vicki Bolen and Amy Sproul to create the Hedi Kyle multi-section slipcase to house four individual books that are bound using the modified hard cover pamphlet book of Barbara Tetenbaum. As a group, we made our linen book cloth and colored wax resist cover paper.
Created using the following Ideation Deck card draws: color – single color; structure – multiple openings; image – extracted from a single image; technique – unfamiliar to you; layout – random or unplanned; text – found text; paper – handmade. Adjectives: issue-based, fragmented or mosaic, unconventional, non-sequential, ordinary or mundane
