Artist Statement about work:
My ideation book begins with a collaboration with two poets – Bob Dylan and Stuart Kastenbaum. Both poems chosen relate to me personally creating a dialogue. The structure is accordion which will allow a lyrical flow of music and scores with images of notes throughout the structure of the book. Handmade papers keep the book low-tech – along with handwriting and transfers. The layout is unplanned and process based on intuition. My choice of color is monochromatic and my vision is based on music. I chose 5 adjective cards – intuitive, musical, traditional, strange and issue based. Strange relates to the poetry. Issue based is my personal relation to the lyrics and music.
Created using the following Ideation Deck card draws: color – monochromatic; structure – accordion; image – symbols; technique – low-tech; layout – random or unplanned; text – collaborate with writer or poet; paper- handmade. Adjectives: intuitive , lyrical or musical , traditional or historical , strange or exotic , issue based
Deborah Martin is an artist who lives in Naples, Florida. She is a mixed media artist who has a strong interest in encaustics. She has been making artists’ books off and on for the last twenty years. To her the artist book is a compelling art object – something the viewer can touch, smell, and actually hold in their hands. She uses handmade papers, drawings, found objects, encaustic and collage in her books. The books are a three dimensional extension of her paintings which focus on the fragility of nature in Southwest Florida.
