Artist Statement about work:

I have been pondering the issue of same sex marriage for a number of years. It is once again in the headlines with the impending supreme court decision. I have done a lot of research into the issues, the opinions and the emotions of the subject. I myself have married and divorced without state interference. For this project i boiled it down to a single question that i think is at the heart (literally) of the matter. The short text on one panel reads: who gets to say that these two can marry and that those two cannot. How does someone’s marriage diminish someone else’s marriage? To commit to another through the act of marriage is a declaration of love unlike any other. Who gets to say that these two can marry and that those two cannot. The pairs of figures are filled in with repeating words, the male and female pair have “i do” over and over, the female pair have “you can’t” over and over. The background of both sides say love is love over and over. Each pair holds a pop-up bouquet.

Created using the following Ideation Deck card draws: color – black and white; structure – multiple openings, dos a dos; image – extracted from a single image; technique – digital; layout – across the folds or gutters; text – stream of consciousness, free write, or rant
