52 Hertz explores ideas about silence via the true story of a whale traveling alone. Calling out at a frequency much higher than other whales, his calls go unheard, unanswered. The book is a gatefold pamphlet that makes use of suminagshi; watercolor; hand-waxed paper; letterpress printed woodcuts, linoleum cuts, photopolymer plates, and hand-set metal type to create the vast space of the ocean. The book is constructed of variable page sizes and transparencies so that images recede and reappear as a reader makes his or her way through the layers of silence. The book features an original poem written by the artist. The book is housed in a completely collapsible portfolio box.

Karen Carcia is a letterpress printer and writer. She is the author of On Subjects of Which We Know Nothing (New Michigan Press, 2011).
