Description

About this piece:
“Post and Beam Posy” is a handmade screen-printed artist book that is part of a four part floral book series created from 2015-2016. This specific book is an edition of three, which uses archival silicon based adhesive as a main binding agent. This series uses the same screen-printed imagery in four distinctly different ways and the collaged, floral images are printed using a four-color process. “Post and Beam Posy” references the mid-century architecture that influenced many iconic suburban constructions of the 1950’s and 1960s. This iconic suburban influence relates to the theme of green barriers, which recurs in many of Mackenzie’s works. A green barrier is a non-confrontational barrier or wall that is used to create privacy or block unwanted objects or neighbors in the residential environment. These types of barriers can also be used to control how people walk through a landscape or around it without the harshness of a hard barrier material, such as concrete, wood, or metal.

The imagery is sourced from my personal archive of family vacation slides and the addition of a limited amount of collage material found in various vintage gardening magazines. The magazine material consists of only 10% of the original collage image and is greatly modified during the digital collage process and the hand-printed screen method. The vintage magazine sourced images are always altered, often they are cut apart and pieced back together, the colors are changed digitally and the clippings are blurred or over sharpened making the original image unrecognizable.
Materials:

cotton paper, acrylic ink, acid free adhesive, book board

NOTE: This book is printed using Golden brand acrylic based screen printing inks and is bound using archival, acid free silicon adhesive, which is extremely strong, yet doesn’t dry out over time. All images are printed on white Somerset Satin 250gsm cotton-rag acid free printmaking paper. The books are surprisingly durable as the acrylic inks become water resistant when dry, creating a plastic like surface to the paper. These books are highly crafted to the uppermost level and are built to last.
