About this piece:
The Honeymoon is about my grandmother and step-grandfather’s trip to San Francisco for their honeymoon. While cleaning out my grandmother’s pantry, I found her planner from the year she was married. Next to the planner was a giant bag of matchbooks collected from hotels and restaurants in her travels with my grandfather. In the planner, my grandmother filled the week of her honeymoon with descriptions of the restaurants they saw and all the meals they ate. She makes no mention of him. On the matchbooks, she scribbled notes about the food or view.
In my artist book The Honeymoon, I created six accordion matchbooks. Each book features a day of my grandmother’s trip, using scans of her own writing from her planner. The books are covered using a silky fabric that mimics the sensual colors lingerie. The Honeymoon is an homage to her love of cooking and the pleasure she took in eating.
