Description

About this piece:

Idyllic Childhood? is a carousel book with five vignettes, three layers each, depicting idealized smiling children at play. The images are from German die cuts and have a vintage Dick and Jane air of innocence. One child is seated in a highchair eating a piece of fruit. The fruit motif is repeated on the binding which is covered in lenticular vinyl paper that shifts from images of cherries to images of lemons, peaches and orange blossoms. The lack of diversity among the children pictured make this childhood seem far from idyllic in today’s world of global awareness and international travel and immigration, hence the question mark.

 Materials:

paper, vinyl, ribbon
