About this piece:
CB’s work originates in themes of community, commonality, nature, and place. She combines her love of nature, wordplay, and unique book structures to create work that reflects the world around her, visually layering text, format and image.
In 2020 I decided to use my connection to the Yellowstone River as my next project. I took more time seriously exploring the river from the Confluence to the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers west to Livingston, MT. At each stop I explored, I sketched, took photos and painted color swatches to bring home. In the studio I mapped out the places I connected.
I love words, text as imagery. from May Stevens words in her water painting to Van Gogh’s mark making.
Lewis and Clark trail signs are part of the journey next to the river. Their journals written in 1806 became my foundation of locations, lacing with my present day journalling.
As I started to explore the drawing the river, I was began to writing my own vignettes. After writing one or two, with titles like ALWAYS, SPIRIT, I starting with looking for other words that were grounding like these. Environment, Abundance, Continuity. These started my writings. They were a place to begin.
I worked with Georgia Greeley to increasing the strength, in texture and heart in my words.
Drawings began, two at a time. The writing would go in spurts. After a landscape was completed, then I would pair it up with a vignette and write the words in the river.

About the artist:
Lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. CB Sherlock’s work has been exhibited throughout the United State. She has been the recipient of fellowships from the McKnight Foundation, Anderson at Tower View, Pine Needles Residency and Salzburg Artist Exchange, Minnesota Book Awards, the Hertzog Awards, International Competition of Society of BookBinders. Her work is included in museum and private collections including: British Library, Walker Art Center, Metropolitan Museum of Art. She is a founding member of Urban Book Chat, Seymour Press and Accordion Press Editions and is a member of Traffic Zone Center for Visual Arts..
