About this piece:
The ten wood engravings in this work are speculative portraits of Roman Tetzlaf, snapshots of him on his voyage home. The short texts paired with the images are musings on his interior journey. The basic facts of Roman’s repatriation are true the speculative portraits and interior musings are written specifically for the book’s images. Each book in the edition is hand calligraphed, the images are printed from lemon wood end grain blocks. The calligraphy and images share a similar quality of black line.

About the artist:
While in graduate school as a ceramics major at the Maryland Institute College of Art, I began working in the printmaking studio making intaglio etchings and drypoints. Thus ended my career in ceramics. Since that time, I have worked exclusively in drawing & printmaking. In 1988, my wife Gretchen and myself began a small press, Red Howler to print hand made, limited edition fine press and artist books. My imagery explores visual and literary ideas through drawings, black and white print media, usually wood engraving though sometimes using intaglio processes lithography.
