About this piece:
This is the second book in a series of 3 using the theme of birds. Passage of Birds was inspired by the great bird migrations of North America and in particular, the sandhill cranes. The poem imperatively urges to experience this natural recurring phenomenon. It is with the efforts of Aldo Leopold in Wisconsin and the Audubon Society in Nebraska that these birds, once declining toward extinction, are now thriving and still talking to you. I designed the pages using abstract images to give a sense of mystery and movement. The words conjure up the enduring strength of these birds.
Print techniques include ink drawdowns, stencils, pochoir, intaglio and letterpress from polymer plates

About the artist:
Julie Baugnet received her Master of Fine Arts Degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She has exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally, and is represented in numerous private and public collections, including Walker Art Center’s Artists’ Book Collection, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design’s Special Collection, The Library of Congress Special Collections and Emory College among over 40 others. The excellence of Baugnet’s work has been acknowledged through a variety of residencies, grants, and awards, including a fellowship from the Atlanta Center for the Arts and a Jerome /Mn Center for Book Arts Fellowship. Fall of 2015 she served as Resident Fellow at IAU College in Aix-en-Provence. Baugnet is professor emerita, of art and design at St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, MN.
Julie frequently collaborates with Carter Clapsadle; they call their latest works Partners in Poetry. Carter is a landscape architect, writer, and poet. He is an environmental educator and consultant based in Wisconsin. His garden designs promote and feature indigenous plants of the midwest. In his spare time he writes & writes & writes.
