Bright yellow cloth bound covers with red foil stamp of an Echinacea. Single sided accordion book with two flag pages. Drypoints printed at Circling the Square Fine Art Press in Gardiner by Rebecca Goodale. Type design and letterpress printing by Scott Vile at Ascensius Press in Bar Mills. Foil stamped by Scott Mullenberg at Mullenberg Designs in Portland. Designed, hand colored, and bound by Rebecca at her studio in Freeport, Maine. Signed and numbered by the artist and the poet. Goodale and Hibl taught a two day course at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in 2022.
Course description:
“The course explores and unites two creative processes: poetry and the visual arts. Taking inspiration from the forms, colors, and inhabitants of the Gardens, students will write, illustrate, and design an artists’ book.”
Not only did the students benefit from their teaching but their collaboration resulted in a beautiful book of poetry and drypoints – Shagbark Sestina.

About the artists:
Rebecca Goodale has been creating innovative and sublimely made artist’s books for the past 35 years. Her love of color and form is reflected in her portrayal of Maine’s rare flora and fauna. In addition to being devoted to her studio work, Rebecca was the founding program director for the University of Southern Maine’s Kate Cheney Chappell ’83 Center for Book Arts where she inspired artists at all levels. She continues to teach design and book arts at various institutions both locally and internationally.
Rebecca’s books can be found in many institutional collections including Bowdoin College, ME; Maine Women Writers Collection at UNE; Herron Art Library, IN; Library of Congress; State Art Museum of Hawai’i; Hello Museum in Seoul, Korea; Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, WA; Young Library, CA, Harvard Fogg Art Library, MA; Yale Library, CT, Ringling School of Art, FL; RISD Library, RI; University of Alberta.In 2015 she was named a Maine Master Craft Artist by the Maine Crafts Association. In 1993 she received a New Forms Regional Initiative Grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts. In 1995 she was a Resident Scholar for the Island Institute in Sitka, AK
Lisa Hibl is a Maine poet. Lisa Hibl’s writing has appeared in various print journals and online magazines. A graduate of Bowdoin College, she holds an MFA from Arizona State and a doctorate in American Literature from Brandeis University. She has designed and taught environmental and literary arts at the University of Southern Maine, the University of New England, Maine College of Arts, and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. She maintains a perennial garden on the edge of a salt marsh on the Sassanoa River.
Long time friends and formerly colleagues at USM, Lisa and Rebecca have team taught book arts and writing courses on occasion.
