This book employs the metaphor of keeping a simple, low maintenance pet (a fish) to examine multiple challenges that schools, and especially young people, are currently facing in Florida and Miami. It seems that most everything that I make for the last few years has been directed to teenagers. From the National Parks books that pass along places that many of my students have not been, to work that was created to record what has disappeared, my work archives my world. This book is a scanned copy of the glass book that approximates the presence of the glass book.
Tom Virgin is a Miami artist making prints, books and public art in residencies around the country. His work has been shown in the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand, as well as nationally from Portland, Oregon to Key West. His work has been featured in 1,000 Artists’ Books: Exploring the Book as Art, and most recently in Lark’s 500 Handmade Books Volume 2, curated by Julie Chen.
