About this piece:

Birdsong is a series inspired by particular birds I see and hear while painting in wildland forests. The imagery and text for this book was created onsite in remote coastal forests during sea kayaking expeditions with my husband in Alaska’s Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords National Park. Painting, walking, drawing, meditating, and observing nature are inseparable aspects of my art practice. During my wilderness sojourns, I work with watercolor, gouache, and ink on rolled or folded sheets of paper, lightweight materials that fit into my pack or kayak. I sit on the ground, under a tarp if needed, and work in response to particular moments, habitats, plants, birds, and animals. My paintings and artist’s books chronicle these outdoor experiences and are prayers for wildness. May this work hold a sense of the sacred with which it was made, and perhaps serve as part of a shrine or as an alter piece.

Quotation from hand-lettered text that is woven into the painted imagery:

“Besides the Hermit Thrush, the other constant birdsong is the Fox Sparrow, singing, gleaning in the intertidal beaches & forests at the water’s edge. Clear notes & buzzy trills, a cheery welcome at every beach… Falling asleep to wave sounds & birdsongs & rainfall, in our tent, pitched between the dense forest and the high tideline, on gravel beach cobbles, shoved about till reasonable flat, cozy & warm, mostly dry, glad.”

About the artist:

Lives and works in Coloma, California, United States

California-based visual artist Andie Thrams uses watercolors in wildland forests to create paintings and artist’s books that explore mystery, reverence, and delight, while also grappling with the vanishing habitats of our era. Merging the lineages of illuminated manuscripts and natural history field journals with a contemporary art and science awareness, her paintings weave intricate detail into rich layers of shape, color, and hand-lettered text to evoke the complex interconnections within ecosystems of the Greater West.
