About this piece:
I found this stack of geology study cards on the ground during a walk in my neighborhood, probably fallen from a backpack of one of the middle school kids. These hand-written note cards (signed “Regina Carlson”) are the inspiration for the sculpted book pages, still strapped with their original hair tie, and now buried in a sand filled box. The inside of the box is coated with sand and pays homage to an erupting volcano, captured on the old postcard. The outer surface is sealed in vintage topography maps (researched and drawn by geologist Donald W. Fisher, Kinderhook NY).

About the artist:

lives in West Hartford, Connecticut, United States

Anita approaches visual story telling through assemblage, installation and sculptural artwork. The ‘everyday’ becomes the catalyst that inspires her work and the presence of collected artifacts recalls a sense of place, identity and history. Balkun received her M.F.A. from the University of Hartford and was commissioned to create installations for City Wide Open Studios 2012, (ArtSpace New Haven), and for PARK(ing) Day Hartford 2013, 2014 & 2015, (Greater Hartford Arts Council). Balkun teaches at the Greater Hartford Academy of Art, and has her studio and home in West Hartford, Conn.
