About this piece:
My Life As A Bird is a fantasy story about a dream I had about my turning into a bird. I used an accordion format in sequencing my story – along with encaustic monotype on handmade papers to create a dreamy feeling. I also used handwritten text to further the idea of journaling after a dream.

About the artist:
resides in Naples, Florida, United States
Based on nature, Deborah Martin’s art work focuses on the fragility of the environment in southwest Florida. Tropical birds, plants, feathers, eggs find their way into her work. She has been making artists’ books off and on for the last twenty years. To her, the artist book is a compelling art object – it is a way of conveying ideas through visual and tactile means. A book that you can hold in your hand – feel the handmade papers, smell the wax and touch the beautiful surfaces. Deborah also uses poetry and writings to dig deeper into her personal relationship with nature and the tropics.
