about this piece

About this piece:

From Dolph’s ongoing series of Scrapbooks, Ascent to the Clouds features a recessed watercolor painting behind a cloud shaped cut out, over-glazed with thin plastic on the cover, with a small wooden ladder also affixed to the cover. Interior pages include two double gate fold out pages in a burgundy paper and six 8 page signatures in a warm tone rag paper.

This series of books addresses Dolph’s interest in blind collaboration, creating a connection between Dolph and the collector, even if s/he remains unknown. To this end, Dolph completes his books with text blocks of blank pages. His hope is that whoever comes to have one of his works finish what he started.

About the artist:

Dolph Smith’s career began in post war Europe as a GI stunned enough by the art and architecture of that world to risk returning to the Memphis College of Art near his home in western Tennessee.  He graduated in 1960 in Advertising Design, soon became bored and picked up a watercolor brush. Five years later he was back at MCA as a faculty member.  He taught there for 30 years developing a Handmade Paper and Book program. He has not been bored since. Now lives and has a studio on a farm he named Tennarkippi Field, on Hurricane Hill, near Ripley, Tennessee.
