Artist Statement about work:
This book was informed by a series of trips taken through california’s central valley and the sacramento and san joaquin river delta. With reduction linoleum prints and text that can be read in a variety of combinations, this book examines the current water crisis in california. While i drew “none” for image, i thought i could cheat a little by having the image appear to vanish. I let the adjectives drawn from the deck influence the tone of the text, and kept the imagery simple to convey the idea of “ordinary or mundane.” The book looks at three parts of california’s watershed: phillips station, the sacramento valley, and tulare lake. It is set in a gatefold case and is bound using a long-stitch sewing.
Created using the following Ideation Deck card draws: color – primary; structure – innovative structure; image – none; technique – mixed media; layout – based on a grid; text – stream of consciousness, free write, or rant; paper- neutral. Adjectives: overwhelming , sentimental , nostalgic , complicated or confusing , ordinary or mundane
