Artist Statement about work:

Back when I got my Ideation deck, and sat down with my friend to draw cards, I was filled with excitement. Jane drew twelve cards that perfectly aligned with her work. I drew twelve cards that are the exact opposite of everything I do. I started this piece three times. It was going to be all copper–a copper codex! How perfect! Except that I realized that copper isn’t very subtle, is it? Then I tried Yupo, and that failed. (I justify my ultimate maximum paper usage with the fact that I use other materials all the time, so this, in fact, was a challenge.) Subtle was probably the killer. I don’t think I’ve ever made a “subtle” piece of artwork, and I’m pretty sure this one isn’t either. Pastel! What? I have never thought to even use pastel or muted tones in my work. Surreal AND Impressionistic–they were killers. I am so glad that I pulled the twelve cards that I did. This was an excellent challenge, and one that I will repeat many times in the future.

Created using the following Ideation Deck card draws: color – muted or pastel; structure – codex; image – found image; technique – hand drawn or painted; layout – centered on the page; text – my choice; paper – minimal paper usage. Adjectives – quiet or subtle, impressionistic, surreal, personal, intuitive
