about this piece
Paper packing pillows, thread, kraft paper, book board
Rational-Irrational employs toss-away materials to explore relationships between seemingly opposing qualities – control and abandon, linearity and expressiveness, precision and randomness – to comment upon perceptions of feminine nature. The book consists of four sewn packing pillows as pages and is without text.
This book uses sewing techniques ranging from blind sewing (in which one side of the page was hidden while being sewn) to precisely marked and measured stitches to large gestural lines with thread. Mistakes and irregularities are intentionally incorporated as marks of value, indicators of the imperfect humanity creating them.
Heather Doyle-Maier uses fiber and text to examine themes of femininity, motherhood and domesticity, bringing her experience as a storyteller-musician, a costume designer and a mother to bear in her work. She holds a BFA from Metropolitan State College of Denver BA from Loretto Heights College/Regis College. She teaches bookmaking and writing workshops in Denver-area schools.
