About this piece:
The book ‘Boxed In? What Where Why’ was created in response to experiences I thought I had moved beyond. This past year of being physically confined due to the pandemic, the toxic political environment and social justice exacerbated the feeling of being compartmentalized and categorized. Even though as individuals, we do not choose our race, gender, color, environment, family and country we are born in, throughout our lives we face some advantages and some disadvantages based on these rigid structures. The three separate books come into a singular form posing questions about what we are boxed in by, where did these associations come from, and why is one disadvantaged due to these biases.
