Artist Statement about work:
The day before I chose my cards for this book, I had seen a billboard that said “CHOOSE HAPPY” on it. I decided that would be my title and theme. I searched in a variety of types of magazines for text that related to choices or happiness. Then I typed CHOOSE HAPPY in the search box of the public library’s catalogue. I was given the title of a book about choosing happiness, and when I went to the stacks to find it, I found others about happiness, so I checked out a few and took them home to start reading. I got quite excited about one of them, and the choosing happiness book had some good quotes too, so I started taking notes. This fortunately fit the scientific or research-based adjective card I had chosen. Since the structure I had chosen was an accordion and the layout was across the folds, making a pop-up book made sense to me, as they always make people happy. I decided to make the text itself pop-up and to make the pop-ups my self-generated image.
Created using the following Ideation Deck card draws: color – pastel; structure – accordion; image – self-generated; technique – my choice; layout – across the folds; text – found; paper- multiple colours. Adjectives: scientific or research-based , loud , elegant or harmonious , opposing or contrasting , textured
