Artist Statement about work:
IIITU is a documented Scrabble game, visually interpreted on paper using screen print, wood block printing, and a typewriter. The book’s title derives from the letters leftover at game’s end. Subtitle is the score. Haiku (technically, senryu) were generated using the words played during the game. There are 95 pages to this book (one page per letter played). Each page is folded using a Turkish map fold, though modified slightly to cope with a large page binding. Three chapters are “bound” in a box that drops open upon lifting off of the box lid. Each chapter has been designated with a color, and the corresponding box flap matches that color. The title is neutral grey. Sample senryu (differentiated from haiku in that it does not focus on nature based themes):
Created using the following Ideation Deck card draws: color – single color; structure – single sheet binding; image – n/a; technique – low tech; layout – based on historic example; text – self generated image symbols; paper – multiple colors. Adjectives – layered, poetic, issue-based, descriptive, instructive/decorative.
