about this piece

About this piece:
This work is inspired by Stephen Hawking’s writing on Black Holes in his popular 1988 book: A Brief History of Time. Each aspect of this book — the modified case binding, the monochromatic palette, the progressive distortion of letterforms from page spread to page spread — works to suggest the mystery and unknowable vastness of the cosmological phenomenon that are black holes.

About the artist:

Suzanne Glémot is a dual master’s candidate at the University of Iowa, earning an MFA in Book Arts at the Center for the Book alongside an MA in Library and Information Science. Originally form France, she holds a BA in Studio Art with a minor in museum studies from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi.

Her creative practice centers heavily on the pursuit of fine craftsmanship, primarily in book binding, but also in hand-lettering, letterpress printing, and hand paper-cutting. This emphasis on craft works to honor the narratives and texts that are at the center of her pieces.
