about this piece

This piece is an accordian style book than can expand up to 24ft. I have been think a lot about the purpose of a book and it’s main task has been the preservation of a language, and for the most part it’s a verbal one. So with this book, I really wanted it to preseve a visual language that is tied to Arab/Islamic culture. My work has many ties to these subjects and I wanted to find a way to preserve it for myself and the next generation that can be physically passed down as something sentimental. My fear with being first generation is losing the language, so not only is it important to preserve the verbal language, it’s also important to preserve the visual and cultural vernacular as well. This piece is screenprinted by hand is a continuous pattern without any splicing involved.
